This course is open to any and
all students interested in learning how to play Shakespeare. All
students are welcome regardless of previous experience.
Approaching
Shakespeare can be intimidating even for the most experienced actor,
and yet he remains a staple in every actor’s toolbox. Shakespeare
for Teens is designed to introduce young actors to the complicated
and beautiful language of one of our greatest English poets,
equipping them with the skills necessary for digging through poetic
language and getting at the meaning of his ideas. Students will
study one play as a group, discussing themes, characters, story, and
plot. Specific scenes will be selected for exploration and
performance. As with all of our workshops, students will be
encouraged to develop trust in the self and in the group, to discover
through exploration and play, and to increase self confidence by
taking risks. Emphasis in this workshop is placed on learning
how to communicate sometimes complicated thoughts with confidence and
ease. Students will learn how to make themselves understood in
spite of the poetry, and will leave with skills that will help them
wade through the thickest language.
